Trending in Yoga: Alien Yoga

*Cue E.T. theme song*

Originally called nauli yoga, the western yoga world has dubbed this old school yoga cleansing exercise, or kriya, “alien yoga” because of the way the stomach contorts while inhaling and moving. Western yoga is based on vinyasa and asanas – poses and breathing – while nauli focuses on holistic health – cleansing and balancing the senses and digestive organs – although there is little scientific proof that practicing nauli enhances digestion.

According to nauli.org, nauli is made up of four movements, in which uddiyana bandha must first be attained before nauli can begin:

1. Uddiyana bandha: an abdominal lock accomplished by emptying lungs and pulling the abdomen in and up under the rib cage

2. Madhyana nauli (central nauli): the isolated contraction of the central abdominal muscles

3. Vama nauli (left side nauli): the isolated contraction of the left side of the abdominal muscles

4. Daksina nauli (right side nauli): the isolated contraction of the right side of the abdominal muscles

Take a look at this out of this world yoga practice:
